What’s your title/role at BrightInsight?

Senior Software Systems Engineer

At BI, I am fortunate to head up the Verification Engineering group within our European Delivery Team, so I oversee a team of talented engineers whose job it is to focus on verification activities across our customer projects. During development, we don’t sit idly by and wait for a finished software product to verify, we actively engage with the rest of the team at each step of the software development process to ensure we have quality baked into our software and this guarantees we ship robust products to happy customers.

Can you share a bit of background on yourself?

I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. As a child, I was very logical, driven and cheeky – and I’m not sure much has changed since! I have always had a big passion for computers so a career in software was a natural choice. After undertaking an MSc in Software Engineering in Ireland, my academic adventures took me to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where I completed my PhD in Robotics. Then my career took me to Edinburgh, Scotland, where I now reside with my lovely wife.

As I have progressed through my career, I have established that I do not have a passion just for developing software, but I am specifically driven to produce high-quality robust software that is utilized to have a profound impact on people’s lives. So naturally I find myself at home at BI.

What is your favorite food?

Irish soda bread, topped with real Kerrygold butter, smashed avocado, bacon rashers and perfectly cooked poached eggs. Heavily seasoned with freshly ground black pepper… and a large pot of tea on the side of course.

Where is your favorite place on earth?

San Diego, California. I spent an amazing summer there in my early 20s and it left an imprint on my soul that will last a lifetime. Irish by birth, SoCal by heart.

Which of BrightInsight’s Values most resonates with you and why?

BI’s values are one of the core reasons I love working here. They are more than mere words on a page, they are a philosophy that the whole team embodies. The one that resonates most with me is Excellence. I am constantly excited by the wealth of talent we have within our company. There is an abundance of knowledge and experience within our team, and this is evident in the quality of the solutions that we produce.

There is an old adage that you are the average of the five people you most surround yourself with. If this is true, then I am in a great position at BI.

What is your favorite part about working at BrightInsight?

My favorite part about working at BI is most definitely the people. In Europe, we have set up and grown an entire department during the pandemic. This in itself is an amazing achievement but what is truly astonishing is how well that team has gelled together in spite of the physical distance between us. For a team that has largely never met in person, we have tremendous rapport and camaraderie.

They say “you don’t build a business; you build people and then people build the business” – and we certain have the right people.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I am a man of simple pleasures. At the weekend, you are mostly likely to find me dining at the latest pop-up restaurant in town, chasing a football (soccer-ball for those west of the Atlantic!) around a football pitch or standing in the stadium cheering on my favorite team. Away from my day job, I like to keep my brain sharp by tinkering with motors, sensors and microcontrollers. Software is not a job, it’s a way of life!
