Global Biotechnology Executive

Ian Thompson is a global biotechnology executive with one of the broadest commercial leadership portfolios in the industry. Over the course of his career, he has led more than 60 markets across North America, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, building and transforming businesses, launching breakthrough therapies, and developing high-performing leadership teams.

Most recently, Ian served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the US at Amgen, where for five years he led and grew the company’s largest business. His organization spanned multiple therapeutic business units including oncology, inflammation, general medicine, and rare disease. He also led the value, access, and patient support organizations. 

He was a member of the CEO Operating Team and the Global Commercial Leadership Team, helping shape enterprise strategy and performance at the highest level.

Prior to leading the U.S. business, Ian served as Senior Vice President and Regional General Manager for Amgen’s Intercontinental Region, overseeing Canada, Latin America, Turkey, the Middle East, and Africa. Under his leadership, the region delivered the company’s fastest growth rates at the time.

Ian’s career path at Amgen also included leading Amgen Europe’s marketing, innovation, and biosimilars portfolio, leading eighteen European markets and several global leadership roles. He started his career at Amgen as the Managing Director of Australia and New Zealand. 

Before joining Amgen, Ian spent 15 years at Eli Lilly in commercial and marketing roles in Australia and the United States.

In addition to his executive responsibilities, Ian has served on multiple boards, including BIO, the BIO Executive Committee, the Healthcare Leadership Council, and the Amgen Foundation. 

He is widely recognized for building strong cross-functional teams, navigating complex policy and access environments, and cultivating influential networks across the global healthcare ecosystem.

A former elite athlete who competed for Great Britain in cycling and completed the Ironman, Ian brings the same discipline, resilience, and competitive spirit to business that defined his athletic career.
